Established in 1989, the Goldman Environmental Prize honors six environmental heroes from six geographic regions annually: Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands and Island Nations, North America, and South and Central America. This prestigious international award supports grassroots leaders who are dedicated to protecting the environment and highlights critical environmental issues globally.

The laureates of the prize are recognized for their exceptional courage, leadership, and achievements in environmental conservation across various issues such as conserving forests and biodiversity, combating climate change, protecting indigenous communities' rights, ensuring access to clean water, and tackling environmental pollution. Their efforts are closely aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDGs 13 (climate action), 15 (life on land), and 16 (peace, justice, and strong institutions).

Recognizing environmental heroes like the 2023 Goldman Prize winners fuels activism and inspires global action for a healthier planet, from protecting forests to securing clean water access.
