Northern policy society collaboration

The Calotte Academy is an annual interdisciplinary program and traveling symposium that brings together early-career researchers, Indigenous representatives, policymakers, and non-state actors to engage with issues related to the Arctic and circumpolar regions. Founded to foster dialogue across academic, cultural, and policy domains, the Academy emphasizes experiential learning through site visits, workshops, and collaborative projects in multiple Arctic locations. Participants explore topics such as regional governance, sustainable development, Indigenous rights, and environmental challenges, gaining practical insights into the social, political, and ecological dynamics of the North. By combining field-based activities with theoretical discussions, the Calotte Academy cultivates a network of informed, cross-cultural leaders equipped to address complex circumpolar issues.

Recently, GSI Tarifa Director Rea Fraser interviewed renowned Arctic scholar Lassi Heinen, founder of “Calotte Academy, School of Arctic Dialogue” and editor of “Arctic Yearbook” a peer-reviewed journal of scholarly articles regarding Arctic analysis, policy and security. The interview explored Calotte Academy’s approach to dialogue, science relevancy and interdisciplinary work and its applicability to other geopolitical contexts, such as the Mediterranean.

The Calotte Academy 2025, with the theme “The Future of Europe – A Northern Point of View”, took place from 10 to 15 November 2025 in the European Arctic. The results of this event and plans for future collaborations between Arctic and Mediterranean interdisciplinary dialogue groups were discussed at the White House during the January 2026 working group.
